Hyderabad: Finally the management of St. Francis College for Women in Begumpet lifted the new dress code rule which required girls not to wear kurtis above the knees. The girls protested on Monday against the new diktat and said that it was a way to moral police the girls.

The girls had blocked the college's entrance at around 8.30 in the morning today and asked the management to withdraw the controversial rule.

The college management informed the girls' representatives that the dress code rule has been lifted but they need to dress according to the undertaking they had signed which read that they can wear all clothes except mini-skirts and crop tops.

St. Francis College management had brought in the new rule from August 1, which required that the girls can't wear kurtis that were above the knees and sleeves to be below the elbow. Students were very unhappy with the decision and as many also said that not all in the college are in a position to buy new clothes. The students said that the new rule was regressive and part of patriarchial mindset.

Situation in the college worsened when on Friday, women security guards were appointed in the college and asked to check the women's attire and according to their discretion allow the women entry to the college and send back students who were not wearing 'below knee length kurtis'.

The students claimed that they were moral-policed so that they can 'get good marriage proposals' in the future.
