Emotional Moments in ICC Men’s World Cup History 

Hyderabad: The game of cricket has always been a more than competition between two contenders. The sport has an emotion attached to it and over the years we have seen quite a number of moments when the cricketers’ have turned emotional. Not just for players, the sport also gets emotional for the fans too.

2015 WC: Sachin Retires From Cricket

You can call it an end of an era when Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar decided to end his cricket career which he nurtured for a span of almost two decades. We can say it with enough conviction that a generation grew up watching Sachin's wizardry with the bat. So, when it was the last time audience saw him batting it was an emotional moment for him as well as the crowd. The 'God of cricket' had left spectacular records with him. He played 200 Tests, 100 international hundreds, 34357 internal runs and much more. He set a record for himself with the highest 34,357 runs across all formats.

2015 WC: MS Dhoni Emotional After Exit

Former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has never shown much of emotion on field. However, emotions ran high after India's loss to Australia in the 2015 World Cup semifinal clash and the composed Dhoni could not stay calm as tears started rolling down his eyes.

2015 WC: AB de Villiers Cries

Despite being the perennial favourites, South Africa always find a way to lose in World Cups or any other big tournaments. In the 2015 World Cup, when Grant Elliott, once a South African before switching his allegiance to New Zealand, swung his bat and planted the penultimate delivery of a thrilling game high over wide long on and into the crowd, it sent the Black Caps into the World Cup final for the first time. Villiers was unable to hold his emotion and started crying profusely in the pitch.

1999 WC: South Africa Semi Final

The ever-unlucky South African faced yet another debacle at the 1999 World Cup semifinal. Requiring just one run off three deliveries with one wicket in hand, a poor attempt at a quick single between Alan Donald and Lance Klusener saw the match ended in a tie.

However, Australia went through to the finals, as they had finished higher on the Super Six table.

1996 WC: India Vs Sri Lanka Semi final

India was cruising through at 98 for one, chasing Sri Lanka’s target of 251. Suddenly, India lost seven wickets within 22 runs. With the fall of the 8th wicket, the crowd went berserk.

It was then that match referee had to abandon the match and that way Sri Lanka won the match by default. The match saw Indian batsman Vinod Kambhi leave the pitch teary-eyed.
