MIM To Sweep Karwan, Malakpet?

MIM’s Ahmed Bin Abdullah Balala - Sakshi Post

The Malakpet assembly constituency in the undivided Hyderabad district was being represented by AIMIM’s Ahmed Bin Abdullah Balala from 2009 until the recent dissolution of the Legislative Assembly on September 6. After defeating Muzafar Ali Khan of the TDP in 2009, Balala trumped the BJP's V. Venkat Reddy by 23, 263 votes in 2014.

The constituency, one of the 13 assembly seats in the Hyderabad Lok Sabha constituency, was represented by the Congress six times, the BJP thrice and the TDP once, since its inception in 1957. This time around, the MIM hopes to retain the constituency while the ruling TRS party fielded Chava Satish Kumar for a friendly contest against Balala.

Muzaffar Ali Khan, the TDP candidate who stood second to Balala in 2009, is the Congress-TDP people's front candidate in the December 7 polls. He stands no chance against the MIM heavyweight in Malakpet. Aale Jitendra, son of former Union Minister Aala Narendra, is the BJP candidate in Malakpet's 293,285 strong electorate.

As things stand, the Malakpet constituency is seen as one of the pocket boroughs of the AIMIM. At one time, the MIM found it difficult to breeze through on account of the spliting of Muslim votes due to the rise of the Majlis Bachao Tehreek (MBT), a breakaway faction of the AIMIM. In its early days, the MBT had a fairly good hold of a sizeable section of the Muslim population in these parts due to the charisma of its founder, Amanullah Khan, a close aide of Asaduddin Owaisi's father, Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi.

However, in later times, after the demise of Amanullah Khan, the party influence declined sharply even as the MIM grew in strength in parts of the old city.

The Karwan assembly constituency in the undivided Hyderabad district was represented by AIMIM’s Kausar Mohiuddin in the recently dissolved Legislative Assembly. He will face the BLF's Mumtaz Ahmed Khan in the upcoming elections, while Mohiuddin will be hoping to continue the MIM's dominance in the constituency since 1999. The MIM candidate will face Usman bin Haji Muhammad Ali of the Congress and T Amar Singh of the BJP while the TRS fielded its candidate Jeevan Singh for a friendly contest.

Barring the initial two elections since inception, the constituency with 314,355 voters was a fortress of the BJP's Baddam Bal Reddy until 1999 and thereafter the MIM's stronghold. Bal Reddy was elected from Karwan in 1985, 1989 and 1994. In all likelihood, the MIM will emerge victorious in the December 7 polls owing to its strong influence in the Muslim population. Local voters complain about the lack of development in the constituency, but in the end are likely to vote for the incumbent.
