Hyderabad: About 20 people from a housing society here thrashed and assaulted two women for feeding stray dogs inside the building premises. A mother, her 20-year-old daughter Mehreen Syed and the girl's friend were beaten up at Diamond Hills Colony in Moula Ali on Monday.

A case has been registered at the Kushaiguda police station after receiving video evidence.

The family said that they regularly vaccinated and sterilised the dogs in the locality. They even got a no-objection certificate when the family realised that the colony members were getting aggressive.

However, on Monday, Mehreen spotted few locals taking away the dogs in a van. When she protested, the locals started manhandling her.

She said when she asked the locals to free the dogs, they started beating her up and one of them also touched her inappropriately. Her mother too was beaten, along with her friend, who she said, had to get three stitches.

Police said that locals complained that they had objected to feeding the stray dogs, as it was disturbing their sleep.

There are laws in place that bars sterilised dogs to be relocated. According to Animal Birth Control Rules 2001, and five different High Court orders, no dogs that have been sterilised can be relocated and they can stay in the area itself.

Meanwhile, social activists took to various social media platforms asking the personal intervention of Rachakonda police commissioner into the matter.
