Makar Sankranti Holiday in UP

The Uttar Pradesh government has announced that January 15, 2026 will be observed as a public holiday across the state on the occasion of Makar Sankranti. The decision was formally issued through a government order and covers all state government offices, schools and public sector institutions.

Earlier there had been uncertainty about whether Makar Sankranti would be celebrated on January 14 or January 15 this year. The recent notification clarifies that the festival holiday will be on January 15, providing everyone in the state an opportunity to celebrate without work or school commitments.

With the holiday in place, government departments including secretariats, district offices and educational institutions will remain closed. Banks and public sector organisations are also expected to observe the holiday in line with the state government’s directive, giving families time to participate in festive activities and rituals.

Makar Sankranti is a significant festival in the Indian cultural calendar, marking the transition of the sun into the zodiac sign of Capricorn, symbolising the onset of longer days and new beginnings. The festival is celebrated across India under different names and traditions, but it generally signifies harvest, prosperity and the end of the winter season.

People in Uttar Pradesh often celebrate by taking ritual baths in sacred rivers, offering prayers, sharing traditional festive food, and participating in community gatherings. The festival also encourages acts of charity and social harmony.

With the state government designating January 15 as a full public holiday, residents now have a clear schedule to enjoy the festivities and spend time with family and friends.
