Hyderabad-Pune-Mumbai Bullet Train Full Details
India’s ambitious high-speed rail expansion has taken another major step forward with the completion of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed Hyderabad-Pune-Mumbai Bullet Train Corridor. The update was shared during a high-level review meeting chaired by K Ramakrishna Rao, where officials discussed progress on multiple bullet train routes connecting Hyderabad with major Indian cities.
The proposed corridor is part of the Centre’s broader vision to strengthen India’s high-speed rail infrastructure and improve connectivity between major economic hubs.
Hyderabad to Mumbai Travel Time to Drop Below 3 Hours
According to railway authorities, trains on the corridor are expected to operate at speeds of nearly 300 kmph. Once operational, the journey between Hyderabad and Mumbai could take as little as 2 hours 55 minutes to 3 hours 13 minutes depending on the number of halts and service category.
Currently, passengers travelling between the two cities spend nearly 12 hours by road and up to 15 hours by conventional trains. Officials believe the bullet train network will dramatically reduce travel duration and improve interstate business connectivity.
Corridor to Pass Through Telangana, Karnataka and Maharashtra
The planned high-speed rail route will cover a total distance of 671 kilometres across three states. Around 93 km of the route will pass through Telangana, nearly 121 km through Karnataka, and approximately 457 km through Maharashtra.
The project was officially announced in the Union Budget 2026-27 under India’s expanding bullet train programme. While feasibility studies and surveys continue for the proposed Hyderabad-Bengaluru and Hyderabad-Chennai corridors, the Hyderabad-Mumbai route has advanced significantly with the DPR already completed.

Railway officials have identified several important locations for proposed stations along the corridor.

Officials are also exploring additional infrastructure development near Shamshabad close to Hyderabad airport for maintenance depots and operational facilities.
Massive Engineering Work Planned
The bullet train route will include complex engineering structures, especially in the hilly terrain of Maharashtra. Officials revealed that around 35.3 kilometres of underground tunnels are planned across multiple stretches in the state.
In the Khandala Ghat region, tunnels are expected to pass through 13 separate hill sections covering nearly 24 kilometres. Much of the rail corridor will run on elevated viaducts similar to metro rail systems.
The project blueprint also includes 101 bridges, among them 13 steel bridges and multiple river crossings. Some of the major planned bridges include:
- 360-metre bridge across the Mula-Mutha River
- 280-metre bridge over the Bhima River
- 225-metre bridge across the Bori River
Land Acquisition Requirements in Telangana
Railway authorities informed the Telangana government that land acquisition for approximately 93 kilometres will be required within the state boundaries. Additional land parcels will also be needed in Kokapet and Shamshabad for station complexes, depots and maintenance facilities.
Officials estimate that each station may require close to 247 acres to accommodate passenger terminals, parking areas and other support infrastructure.
The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) has reportedly requested cooperation from the Telangana government for speedy land allocation.
Passenger Capacity and Future Demand
Each high-speed train operating on the route is expected to feature 16 coaches with a seating capacity of around 1,215 passengers.
According to early projections, the corridor could witness daily ridership of more than 63,000 passengers during its initial year of operation, with numbers expected to rise steadily in the future.
Officials believe the bullet train project will boost industrial activity, tourism, IT sector connectivity and economic growth across Telangana, Maharashtra and Karnataka while improving links with other proposed corridors to Bengaluru and Chennai.
