Hyderabad: With Secunderabad Cantonment Board elections due next year, both TRS and the BJP are eyeing to win the elections and have demanded that the elections be done on a party basis. The tenure of the present board members ends on January 2020 and the elections are scheduled that month itself.

The defence ministry will soon issue a notification announcing the dates in October 2019, according to a daily.

Both the parties demand that the elections are done on a party basis, and the BJP and TRS working president K.T. Rama Rao have demanded the same.

There are 62 cantonments, and barring Pune, Kirkee and Varanasi Cantonment Board elections, all other boards hold elections on non-party basis.

In the earlier elections, out of eight, four TRS supported members were elected.

Recently, Rama Rao had held a meeting at the Cantonment area and criticised Centre for not taking up developmental works and also not handing it over to the state government, and creating hurdles in the state's way.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP won four seats out of 17, including the Secunderabad Lok Sabha seat. The party is confident that if the election is held on a party basis, it can win.

BJP leaders said that the defence ministry has to take a decision whether or not the cantonment board elections should be held on a party basis.
