Migrant Movement: India's Coronavirus Count Reaches 1.45 Lakh

NEW DELHI: The number of COVID-19 cases in India has crossed the 1.45 mark while the death toll from the coronavirus pandemic was 4,345. After the return of migrant workers from the other places, a surge in the cases has been reported in the states like Bihar, West Bengal, Assam and Odisha.

The count is also increasing in the worst-hit states Maharashtra, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu, while Delhi, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Kerala, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh have also reported a significant number of cases. After Moscow, Sao Paulo and New York, Mumbai is among the world's four cities recording with more number of COVID-19 cases in the past four to five days.

Since May 1, special trains are being arranged to ferry the stranded migrant workers. More than 44 lakh migrant workers reached their home towns. As per the reports, an additional 41,673 people had traveled to their home states through flights till Tuesday. 

The state governments announced mandatory institutional quarantine on arrival for all. The Supreme Court has already directed the centre and state governments to provide enough facilities to the migrant workers. But, on Tuesday, the apex court said that it has taken suo motu cognisance of the problems faced by the migrant workers.

COVID-19 Cases In India Crosses 1.45 Lakh:

According to the latest update, a total number of 1,47,758 cases have been reported in India and the pandemic has claimed the lives of 4,345 people. The COVID-19 recovery rate is increasing in the country.

At a press briefing, Health Ministry Joint Secretary Lav Agarwal said, "The recovery rate in the country continues to improve and is presently 41.61 percent. The COVID-19 fatality rate has reduced from 3.3 percent on April 15 to 2.87 percent which is among the lowest in the world."
