TTD Priests in Trouble for Blessing Jagan: CBN Govt Under Fire

In a shocking and unpleasant development targeting the innocent priests, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams initiated action against priests for extending customary blessings to YS Jagan Mohan Reddy — a move that critics say reflects the Chandrababu Naidu government’s growing tendency to conflate religion with political rivalry.

At the heart of the row are show-cause notices issued to three priests for offering traditional temple honours during Jagan Mohan Reddy’s recent visit to Pulivendula. The priests — associated with the Ontimitta Kodandarama Temple and a temple in Rajampet mandal — had presented sacred offerings such as Sesha Vastram, Ramulori Thomala, and Mutyala Talambraalu, along with Vedic blessings.

TTD authorities have termed the act a “serious protocol violation,” citing the absence of prior permission. But the action has sparked criticism from political observers and sections of the public, who view it as disproportionate and politically loaded.

Temple honours, they argue, have long been extended across party lines as part of religious custom rather than political endorsement. In that context, singling out priests for interacting with an opposition leader raises uncomfortable questions about administrative overreach and selective enforcement.

The notices, issued by Ontimitta temple officials, demand explanations within two days and warn of disciplinary action. However, the larger debate now centres on whether established religious practices are being subjected to bureaucratic scrutiny based on political considerations.
