COVID-19: Over 4,000 New Cases, India Records Biggest 1-Day Jump

NEW DELHI: India on Monday saw the highest single day spike in COVID-19 cases as the number crossed 67,000-mark with 4,213 new cases and 97 deaths in 24 hours. With this the country's tally stands at 67,152 and death toll at 2,206, Union Health Ministry said.

The spike comes as India enters the last week of the 54-day coronavirus lockdown

Out of total, currently there are 44029 active cases while 20917 patients have been cured and discharged including one foriegn national case who migrated.


Maharashtra remained worst affected in the country with 22,171 cases, followed by Gujarat at 8,194, Tamil Nadu at 7,204, Delhi at 6,923, Rajasthan at 3,814, Madhya Pradesh at 3,614 and Uttar Pradesh at 3,467, health ministry said in the morning update.

Meanwhile, the Railways on Sunday said it is starting 15 air-conditioned special trains from May 12 as part of the gradual resumption of passenger services.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will interact via video conference with chief ministers likely on a strategy for a phased exit from the shutdown.

Globally, the deadly virus has claimed nearly 3 lakh lives with more than 40 lakhs of confirmed cases. United States tops the list among all other countries worldwide.
