Nipah Virus Scare In Telangana, Health Dept Steps In

Hyderabad: After a patient tested positive for deadly Nipah virus, neighbouring state Karnataka has sounded an alarm and Telangana health authorities is also taking precautions to prevent the spread of the virus.

An advisory has been circulated among health authorities to keep an eye for suspected cases and also track travel history of patients who are showing the symptons.

However, no official alert has been sounded in the state.

This is the second outbreak of Nipah virus in Kerala and the fourth in the country. A 23-year-old engineering graduate has been tested positive for the virus in Kerala and 300 persons who came in contact with him have been kept under observation.

Dr K Shankar, director Institute of Preventive Medicine (IPM) told ToI that the health officials and hospitals have been alerted and also information on Nipah literature and its prevention has been sent to hospitals.

As preliminary steps, officials are making preparations for screening travellers at airports.
