1st Phase Polling Ends Peacefully: Telangana Panchayat Elections

Hyderabad: Polling was held peacefully for the first phase of Panchayat elections in the 3,701 Gram Panchayats in the state of Telangana today. This is the first ever election for Gram Panchayats after the separate Telangana State was formed in 2014.

As per the State Election Commission, over 75% of the 40 lakh voters utilized their franchise.The counting of votes is on and the election of UPO (Deputy) Sarpanch also will be held this evening.

As many as 12,202 candidates contested for sarpanch posts in 3,701 panchayats while 70,094 candidates are in the fray for 28,976 wards, a senior official of the State Election Commission had said earlier.Though 4,479 panchayats were scheduled to go the polls in the first phase, the election was declared unanimous in 769 panchayats, and elections to another nine were cancelled due to other reasons.

Campaigning for the second phase of elections for 4,135 panchayats is on while he filing of nominations for 4,116 panchayats under the third phase concluded on Friday evening. Around 26,106 nominations were filed for sarpanch posts for the third phase elections while 93,518 nominations were filed for elections to 36,729 wards. It is learnt that at least 600 panchayats unanimously elected their representatives for the respective local bodies in the third phase.

The final list of eligible contestants will be released on January 22 after the scrutiny of nominations.The second and third phases of the Telangana Panchayat polls will be held on January 25 and 30,2019.
