Engineering Student Falls Victim To Drunken Driving In City

Hyderabad: A 20-year-old engineering student, Lakshmihaasya (20), fell victim to an incident of drunken driving, here on Sunday afternoon.

A student of Narayanamma Engineering College, Lakshmihaasya, along with her friends reached Ohri's restaurant on Necklace road to celebrate her friend Vishal's birthday. The latter was a student of GITAM Engineering College and son of prominent lawyer from Karimnagar. At the restaurant, Vishal and another friend Rohit consumed alcohol while other friends - Santosh, Nidhi and Lakshmihaasya had lunch. However, while leaving the restaurant Vishal drove the car and the group headed towards Ranigunj area. Near Bathukamma Kunta, Vishal lost control of the vehicle and it overturned throwing Lakshmihaasya out of the vehicle. She died within a few minutes after being rushed to nearby KIMS hospital. The others, Vishal, Santosh, Nidhi and Rohit managed to escape with minor injuries.

Besides the accident, police are also investigating regarding serving of liquor by Ohri restaurant to 20-year-old Vishal. The city police and excise officials had prohibited serving of liquor to people below 21 years of age after the death of school girl Ramya in Punjagutta recently. Ramya, it may be recalled, died when a car driven by drunken youth fell on her car after hitting the road divider.
