Hyderabad Witnesses Low Voter Turnout

Hyderabad: During Telangana's first ever Lok Sabha election after attaining statehood in 2014 on Thursday, Hyderabadis gave the polls a miss once again. Inspite of the Election Commission and Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) undertaking a month-long campaign urging voters from the urban areas to excercise their right to vote, the Greater Hyderabad region recorded the lowest turnout of 42.24% in the elections.
The three Lok Sabha constituencies - Hyderabad recorded 39.49% voting, Secunderabad - 44.9% and Malkajgiri registered 49.11%. Meanwhile, Chevella Lok Sabha constituency recorded 53% polling.
In the previous Lok Sabha polls, Telangana had recorded 72% voting with both Hyderabad and Secunderabad registering more than 53% voter turnout.
Officials are attributing the decrease in poll percentage to the delinking of assembly polls with the Lok Sabha polls. Also, many voters' names were missing in the previous Assembly elections which may have caused them to not appear for polls assuming their names will be missing this time as well.
