Supreme Court Judges Adjusting To New Listing System, Need Time To Hear Final Matters
After taking charge as the new Chief Justice of India, Justice UU Lalit introduced a new system of listing cases on non –miscellaneous days (Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays) in the Supreme Court. The new CJI who will be in term for less than 80 days is due to retire on November 8. The new listing system was the first thing he implemented after taking charge in August.
Its hardly been a month and the SC Benches in the Supreme Court are adjusting to the new format of hearing matters.
Recently a Bench comprising of Justices Kaul and Abhay S Oka criticized the new system and stated that there are too many matters in the afternoon session which leaves the bench with little time to take up matters fixed for final disposal. This observation was made while passing an order in a case.
The bench noted that, the new listing system is not giving adequate time to take up matters fixed for hearing like the present case as there are number of matters within the span of ‘Afternoon’ session.
As per the new listing system on non-miscellaneous days, the Supreme Court currently hears regular matters in the morning session (10.30 am to 1 pm) and miscellaneous and after notice matters in the afternoon session (2 pm to 4 pm). The norm earlier was to take up miscellaneous matters first and then proceed to the regular hearing.
