Hyderabad: A young couple attempted suicide on Friday at Tankbund in the city after they were forced to marry by Bajrang Dal activists on Valentine's Day.

The couple hailing from Siddipet were caught by the activists in Kandlakoya Oxygen Park in Medchal on Thursday following which the boy was made to tie a thread representing a mangalsutra to the girl.

The video of the 'marriage' was also shared by the activists on social media. The protests could be heard congratulating the boy in the video claiming it's an auspicious day as the boy 'tied the knot'.

On the eve of Valentine's Day, workers of Bajrang Dal, Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and other right-wing groups staged protests in various parts of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

However, after the incident, the couple, humiliated by the ordeal refused to return home and planned to commit suicide. They jumped into the Hussain Sagar lake on Friday but were rescued by the police. The couple was sent to the police station for counselling and later handed over to their families.

Following the incident, the police had been searching for the couple as their parents had informed of them not returning home.
