Sircilla First Municipal Body Builds Kiosks For Vendors Using Re-Cycled Plastics

Hyderabad: In a first, Telangana's Sircilla district has become the first municipal body in the country to build eco-friendly kiosks for street-side vendors using recycled plastic. The project is a part of Urban Street Vendors Project which aims at providing good environment for vendors.

TRS Working president and Sircilla MLA KT Rama Rao inaugurated the facility on Tuesday.

There are 55 kiosks in different places in the district. Each kiosk is of 8x8 ft size and around 400 kg of plastic waste has been used to build a single kiosk.

Bamboo House India head Prashanth Lingam, the company which undertook the project told a leading website that the kiosks were built in a span of three months and another 43 kiosks have been commissioned to be made in Siddipet.

Talking about the infrastructure of the kiosks, he said that the average cost of building one kiosk is roughly over Rs 1 lakh. They have been provided to the vendors free of cost.

To build one plastic kiosk, it requires 9,900 kg of plastic for the walling and roofing each and 13,200 kg for the flooring. In total, 33,000 kg of plastic was used to build the 55 kiosks.

Also, all the materials used are made using LDPE plastic, which is low density polyethylene plastic, one simple example of which is the milk packets that we dispose off.

The obstacle in opting for such a model is the high prices at segregating and recycling the plastic waste, although the durability of plastic houses is also debatable, he said.
