October 28 Bank Holiday or not in India?

Banks in some areas of India will be closed on October 28, 2025, on account of the Chhath Puja festival, while banks in most other states will function normally. The four-day Chhath Puja that started on October 25 ends on October 28 with the Usha Arghya, when the followers worship the sun rising on the eastern horizon.

As per the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) holiday calendar, Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal banks will close on October 28 for the last day of Chhath Puja. Bank holidays in these states began at the weekend, with Saturday, October 25, and Sunday, October 26, being non-working days. Therefore, banks within these areas will enjoy a four-day holiday and reopen on Wednesday, October 29.

However, banks in the majority of other states of India, such as Delhi, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Gujarat, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan, will be operational on October 28. These states do not have Chhath Puja as a public holiday, and hence, all banking services will function as usual without any break.

Even when banks are shut in states, customers can make use of digital banking channels like ATM withdrawal, UPI payments, mobile banking, and net banking for transactions.

In short, banks will be shut on October 28 in Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal because of Chhath Puja, while other branches across India will function normally. Customers are encouraged to refer to local bank notifications and visit accordingly.
