November 19 School Holiday in Tamil Nadu due to Heavy rains?

The Regional Meteorological Centre has issued a rain alert for several districts of Tamil Nadu for November 19, warning of intense showers in many southern and coastal regions. While weather conditions are expected to remain unstable, no official announcement has been made regarding school or college holidays. Authorities are closely watching the situation and may take a decision if conditions worsen.

Rain Forecast for Southern Districts

According to the latest forecast, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in parts of Tirunelveli, especially its Ghat areas, which are under an orange alert. A yellow alert has been issued for districts such as Kanyakumari, Thoothukudi, Tenkasi, Virudhunagar, Theni, Madurai, Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram. These areas are expected to see strong rain accompanied by thunderstorms.

Weather in Chennai

Chennai may receive light to moderate rain with thunderstorms later in the day. Temperatures in the city are expected to range between 25°C and 31°C, indicating humid and cloudy conditions.

Low Pressure System Behind the Rain

The current rainfall is being influenced by a low pressure area over the Southwest Bay of Bengal and nearby Sri Lanka. The system has moved towards the Comorin region and is supported by a cyclonic circulation extending up to higher atmospheric levels. Another low pressure area is also likely to develop over the Southeast Bay of Bengal around November 22, which may further intensify rainfall in the coming days.

Recent Rainfall Highlights

Several locations received significant rainfall on Monday. Vedaranyam recorded the highest at 12 cm. Many areas in Tirunelveli, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur and neighbouring districts also saw rainfall between 7 and 14 cm, showing widespread activity across the state.

Temperature Snapshot

Kanyakumari recorded the highest maximum temperature at 31.8°C, while Karur Paramathi saw the lowest minimum temperature in the plains at 18.5°C.

Holiday Status for Schools and Colleges

At present, there is no official holiday declared for schools or colleges on November 19. Institutions are expected to operate normally. However, considering the heavy rain alerts, authorities may review the situation based on overnight rainfall and early morning conditions. If the weather deteriorates further, there is a possibility of holiday announcements, but nothing has been confirmed yet.
