PF Benefits for More People: EPFO to Increase Wage Limit Soon

 - Sakshi Post

What the New Proposal Means for Employees?

The Central Government is preparing to take a major step aimed at strengthening social security for millions of salaried workers across the country. According to reports, the government is evaluating a proposal to increase the wage ceiling for mandatory Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) coverage.

If the proposal is approved, a large section of employees who currently remain outside the EPF framework—or receive only limited benefits—may finally gain greater financial protection.

What Is the Current Wage Limit?

At the moment, EPF is compulsory only for employees whose basic salary plus dearness allowance (DA) is ₹15,000 or below per month. This wage threshold was last revised in September 2014 and has remained unchanged for nearly a decade.

During these years, both salaries and cost of living have increased significantly. However, the PF wage limit has not been updated accordingly.

The government is now considering raising the wage ceiling—possibly up to ₹30,000 per month—which could bring many mid-level earners under compulsory EPF coverage. Private-sector employees, including those in MSMEs and service industries, stand to benefit the most.

Benefits of Increasing the Wage Ceiling

Raising the EPF limit would create several long-term advantages for employees:

Greater Savings for the Future

Since EPF contributions include both employee and employer shares, a higher wage limit will lead to increased long-term savings.

 Better Post-Retirement Security

A larger retirement corpus will strengthen financial stability after superannuation.

Expanded Pension Coverage

Employees who come under EPF will also be eligible for the Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS), improving their pension benefits.

Tax Advantages

PF contributions offer various tax benefits under existing income tax rules.

 Access to Partial Withdrawals

Under EPF rules, employees can withdraw funds for specific needs such as home construction, education, medical emergencies, and other essential expenses.

Impact on Employers

A higher wage ceiling will require companies to contribute more towards their employees’ provident fund accounts. Although this may increase the financial burden on employers in the short term, experts believe the long-term benefits—such as improved employee retention and a more secure workforce—will outweigh the additional costs.

Consultations Underway

The government is expected to hold discussions with trade unions, industry associations, and other stakeholders before finalizing its decision. Once feedback from all concerned parties is reviewed, the Centre is likely to take a final call on the proposal.

If implemented, this move could mark an important milestone in India’s social security framework, offering stronger protection to the country’s growing workforce.
