Strongest typhoon since 1983 hits Hong Kong, to impact North Coastal AP 

Visakhapatnam: Typhoon Nida, which passed over the Philippines, is set to be the strongest typhoon in the region since 1983.

The typhoon is set to make an impact on north coastal AP bringing rainfall to several areas in the region. Meanwhile, the state government is taking measures to alert fishermen if the typhoon situation worsens. Emergency and disaster response teams are being placed on standby.

At least 9,000 persons were displaced when tropical storm Nida, also called Carina, hit the Philippines on Monday, the state disaster management agency said.

The 1,976 families or 8,809 individuals who were affected by the weather disturbance came from four regions, mostly in northern part of the country. Of those affected, over 500 persons were being served in 13 evacuation centres. Since Sunday, 40 domestic and international flights were cancelled due to bad weather.

China’s State Oceanic Administration (SOA) on Monday issued a red alert for ocean waves and storm tides as Typhoon Nida approached the mainland. From Monday onwards, sea waves as high as 11 metres were expected in the northern South China Sea, while the southern Taiwan Strait was forecast to witness waves as high as seven metres.

Several Chinese provinces suffered heavy damages due to heavy rains during the past few weeks. At least 173 people were killed and 126 people listed missing in last weeks’s rains.
