COVID 3rd Wave Fear: Passenger Trains To Resume Much Later

COVID 3rd Wave Fear: Passenger Trains Likely To Restart After Another Two Weeks - Sakshi Post

HYDERABAD: With the COVID third wave looming across the country, the Railways which was planning to resume trains and the suburban trains and MMTs after October, has deferred the move.

This was also due to the Diwali festivities around the corner and as people are likely to celebrate the festival which could lead to an increase in the cases. The Railway Department wants to wait for two weeks after Diwali and take a decision on whether or not to resume trains as per the situation.

About 250 passenger trains run regularly on the South Central Railway line. These trains were stooped at the onset of the first lockdown which was imposed in late March 2020 in the wake of the first wave of the COVID pandemic. After that, the express trains were resumed phase-wise, but that was stalled again after the second lockdown was imposed this year. As of now, almost all express trains are plying across the country

Hyderabad city MMTS trains, which have been confined to their sheds for almost 15 months, have also started plying but in limited numbers. While there are a total of 121 MMTS trains in Hyderabad, there are currently 60 trains running. It was decided last month that the number of passenger trains would also be increased. But, as the number of Covid‌ cases has been increasing since the past few days, the Railway board, might postpone them again. The Railway authorities are also of the view that a decision on this can be taken only after observing the situation for a few days after the end of Diwali.
