OpenAI Drops Surprise ChatGPT 5.1 Update With New Conversation Styles

OpenAI has unexpectedly released a fresh update to its flagship AI model, introducing ChatGPT 5.1 with smarter responses, improved instruction-following, and new conversation styles. CEO Sam Altman described the latest upgrade as “a nice improvement,” promising users a more natural and intuitive chatbot experience.
Two Versions of ChatGPT 5.1 Announced
The company has confirmed that two versions of ChatGPT 5.1 will be available to the public, with paid users receiving access starting today.
1. ChatGPT 5.1 Instant
This will be the platform’s most widely used model, designed to give faster, more accurate responses. OpenAI says it can better understand user instructions and deliver more intelligent answers than earlier versions.
2. ChatGPT 5.1 Thinking
This variant focuses on advanced reasoning capabilities. It aims to provide simpler, clearer explanations while reducing token usage for basic queries. For complex questions, the model is expected to produce deeper insights with significantly less jargon.
Customizable Tone & New Conversation Styles
ChatGPT 5.1 also brings tone customization, allowing users to tailor how the AI communicates. As part of this shift, OpenAI has introduced three new conversation styles:
- Professional
- Quirky
- Candid
These styles are meant to make interactions feel more personal and aligned with each user’s preferences.
A Step Toward Highly Personalized AI
OpenAI says the ChatGPT 5.1 update marks the beginning of a larger push toward deeply personalized AI experiences.
“Today’s GPT 5.1 updates and new customization options are a step toward a ChatGPT that feels like it fits you—smarter, more enjoyable to talk to, and more adaptable to your preferences. Going forward, we’ll continue improving along these dimensions—there’s much more to come,” the company stated.
