Ramadan 2025: First Roza Day on March 1 or 2?

With the holy month of Ramadan on the horizon, millions of Muslims around the globe are readying themselves for a time of fasting, prayer, and devotion. The precise onset of Ramadan, however, is based on moonsighting reports. In India, the first Roza (fast) will reportedly start either on March 1, 2025, or March 2, 2025, depending on the sighting of the crescent moon.
Moonsighting and the Islamic Calendar
The Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar, with each month starting with the observation of the new crescent moon. Shaban, the month before Ramadan, started on January 31, 2025, in most countries. By tradition, if the crescent moon can be seen on the 29th day of Shaban, Ramadan would start the following day.
Expected Start Date of Ramadan 2025 in India
Astronomers also forecast that the moon could be seen on February 28, 2025, which would determine the first fast (Roza) for March 1, 2025. But if the moon is not seen on February 28, then Shaban will be made one day longer and the commencement of Ramadan will become March 2, 2025. In India, the moonsighting committees will scan the sky on March 1, 2025, and if the crescent moon is seen, then Ramadan will start on March 2.
Fasting Calendar and Local Differences
Though March 1 might be the start date for some regions, others would start on March 2 or March 3 based on moon visibility. Indian Muslims will wait for official notifications from local Islamic institutions to ascertain the beginning date. Irrespective of the date, the meaning of Ramadan never changes – spirituality, self-control, and group cohesion.
As Ramadan 2025 approaches, Muslims globally wait for the official moonsighting announcement to start fasting. Although the precise commencement date will differ based on local moonsighting observations, the religious importance of Ramadan does not change. May this holy month usher in peace, blessings, and spiritual development to all who celebrate.
