Oman Confirms Ramadan 2026 Start Date as February 19

Oman has officially announced the start of the holy month of Ramadan, becoming one of the first countries in the Gulf region to confirm the date. Authorities have declared that Thursday, February 19, 2026, will mark the beginning of Ramadan 1447 AH, offering residents ample time to prepare spiritually and practically for the sacred period.

Ramadan 2026 Start Date Confirmed

The decision was issued by the Main Committee for Moon Sighting operating under the Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs. According to astronomical assessments, the crescent moon could not be observed earlier because it was expected to set before sunset, making visibility impossible.

As a result, the Islamic month preceding Ramadan will complete 30 days, and the fasting month will commence the following day. The announcement reflects a careful combination of traditional moon-sighting practices and modern scientific calculations, ensuring accuracy in determining the start of the holy month.

How the Date Was Determined

In the Islamic calendar, a new month typically begins after the crescent moon is sighted shortly following sunset on the 29th day of the current month. If the moon is not visible, the month automatically extends to 30 days.

Astronomers studying the lunar position concluded that early sighting was not feasible, allowing officials to confidently establish February 19 as the first day of fasting. Similar projections have been made across other Gulf countries, where experts also anticipate the same start date unless an unexpected sighting occurs.

Shorter Working Hours Announced

• To help individuals balance work commitments with worship, the Ministry of Labour has introduced reduced working hours during Ramadan.
• Public sector employees will generally work five consecutive hours per day, with some flexibility in start times while maintaining the total duration.
• Private sector Muslim employees will work no more than six hours daily, with a weekly limit of 30 hours.
• These measures are designed to support productivity while acknowledging the physical demands of fasting and the importance of nightly prayers.

A Month of Reflection and Community

With the official date confirmed, preparations are already underway across the country. The period is widely associated with prayer, charity, and gatherings for Iftar meals after sunset. Mosques are expected to welcome larger crowds for special nightly prayers, and communities often organize charitable initiatives to assist those in need.
