November 17 School Holiday: Chennai, Tamil Nadu Districts Rain Update!

 - Sakshi Post

With a fresh wave of low-pressure systems forming over the southwest Bay of Bengal, the state of Tamil Nadu is once again bracing for heavy rain, and officials, parents and students are watching the skies for an official holiday announcement on Monday, November 17. While no district has yet declared schools closed, major alerts and worsening weather conditions make a closure increasingly likely.

In Chennai, an orange alert is in place for November 17, with the India Meteorological Department forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated places. The storm-system currently drawing moist winds toward the coast means moderate rain and thunderstorms are expected tonight. Right now the city is cloudy and mild, around 28°C and dropping to 25°C by midnight. Showers are expected to increase later into Monday morning, which raises concerns of waterlogging and unsafe commutes for students.

Beyond Chennai, areas such as Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu and Tiruvallur are under similar threat, while coastal districts including Nagapattinam and the delta region remain on alert. Some interior and western districts, however, are forecast to see only light to moderate rain, making a blanket closure less probable there.

Since no official holiday notification has been issued, each district is being advised to make a ground-level assessment late tonight. Protection of student safety is the priority, and if rainfall and road conditions worsen, schools in several districts may be declared closed.

As the weather remains unstable, it’s recommended that all parents stay tuned to local announcements from the school and district collector’s office. The next 12 hours will be critical in deciding whether Tamil Nadu’s schools will open as usual or shut for the day.
