Dengue Risk Doesn't End With Recovery, Children Remain Vulnerable to Severe Complications and Reinfection

Hyderabad pediatrician warns that dengue can pose long-term health risks for children even after apparent recovery

While most parents breathe a sigh of relief once their child recovers from dengue fever, medical experts caution that the threat may not end when the fever subsides. Dengue can have lasting health implications and children remain vulnerable to severe complications and reinfections, according to Dr. M. Surendranath, Head of the Department of Paediatrics at Vijay Marie Hospital, Hyderabad.

"Dengue is often perceived as a one-time illness, but it is much more than a simple fever," Dr. Surendranath said. "Children, particularly those under 12 years of age, are more susceptible to severe dengue because their immune systems are still developing. Without timely treatment, severe dengue can become life-threatening."

India continues to report a significant number of dengue cases among children under the age of 15. According to the expert, many families are unaware that the consequences of dengue may extend beyond the acute illness. Children can experience long-term effects after recovery and, importantly, can contract dengue more than once.

Traditionally associated with the rainy season, dengue has evolved into a year-round public health concern. Rising temperatures and changing climate patterns have expanded the transmission window, particularly across western and southern India, where the disease is increasingly being reported throughout the year.

"Dengue-carrying mosquitoes thrive in warm temperatures," Dr. Surendranath explained. "The ideal temperature range for transmission is between 25°C and 33°C. Warmer conditions accelerate mosquito development, increase biting frequency, and allow the virus to multiply more efficiently."

He noted that global warming has further intensified dengue transmission risks, with studies indicating that even a one-degree Celsius rise in temperature can significantly increase infection rates in tropical and subtropical regions.

The Critical Phase Often Begins After Fever Subsides

One of the biggest misconceptions surrounding dengue is that the danger passes once the fever drops.

Symptoms typically begin five to seven days after a mosquito bite and often include high fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint pain, nausea, vomiting, swollen glands, and skin rashes.

However, doctors warn that the most dangerous stage may begin after three to seven days, precisely when the fever starts subsiding.

"This period, known as the critical phase, can give parents a false sense of security," said Dr. Surendranath. "In reality, it is during this stage that warning signs of severe dengue often emerge."

Parents should watch out for symptoms such as severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, rapid breathing, bleeding from the nose or gums, unusual fatigue, restlessness, blood in vomit or stool, excessive thirst, pale or cold skin, and weakness. Medical intervention should be sought immediately if any of these signs appear.

Health experts caution that a child's condition can deteriorate rapidly within hours, potentially requiring hospitalization and intensive care.

Missing School and Disrupted Childhood

Beyond the immediate health risks, dengue can significantly disrupt a child's daily life. Hospitalized children often miss several days of school, while even those treated as outpatients may remain absent for extended periods.

"Dengue affects more than physical health," Dr. Surendranath said. "It interrupts learning, keeps children away from friends and activities, and transforms normal family life into a period of recovery and uncertainty."

Why Reinfection Can Be More Dangerous

Another critical concern is the possibility of repeat infections.

Dengue is caused by four different virus serotypes—DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3, and DENV-4. While recovering from one serotype provides immunity against that particular strain, it does not offer long-term protection against the other three.

"A second dengue infection can often be more severe than the first," Dr. Surendranath warned. "Since all four serotypes circulate in India, children who have already recovered from dengue remain vulnerable to future infections."

Prevention Remains the Best Protection

Dengue-transmitting mosquitoes are active during daylight hours, especially in the early morning, placing children at risk both at school and at home.

These mosquitoes breed in clean, stagnant water commonly found in coolers, buckets, flowerpots, overhead tanks, and other water-holding containers. Even small amounts of water left behind after rainfall can become breeding sites.

Doctors advise parents to regularly inspect their surroundings for stagnant water, ensure proper storage of water, encourage children to wear full-sleeved clothing, and use child-safe mosquito repellents when outdoors.

Dr. Surendranath also stressed the importance of community participation in dengue prevention.

"Families alone cannot eliminate the threat. Neighbours, schools, resident welfare associations, and local communities must work together to identify and remove mosquito breeding sites. Small collective efforts can significantly reduce transmission and help protect children."

As dengue cases continue to pose a challenge across India, health experts urge parents to remain vigilant even after recovery. Early recognition of symptoms, prompt medical attention, and sustained preventive measures can help safeguard children from the potentially serious consequences of the disease.
