Hyderabad: Costco Coming to the City? Here’s the Real Truth Behind the Buzz

Social media has been abuzz with claims that popular US retail chain Costco is set to open a store in Hyderabad. The excitement began after Costco posted about its Hyderabad operations, which many assumed referred to a retail outlet.
However, later clarifications suggest that this interpretation may not be accurate. According to multiple posts and sources, Costco is not launching a retail store in India at present. Instead, the company is reportedly establishing a Global Capability Centre (GCC) in Hyderabad.
The misunderstanding gained traction as people expected Costco’s entry to significantly lower prices of groceries and household items. Addressing the confusion, one social media post clarified that the Hyderabad facility is a backend operation announced in late 2025, not a customer-facing warehouse.
Further details reveal that the GCC will serve as a technology and operations support hub, handling global functions such as IT services, analytics, finance, and digital platforms. The centre is expected to create around 1,000 jobs initially, with more roles likely in the future.
At present, there is no confirmation from Costco about opening a retail outlet in Hyderabad. Until an official announcement is made, the city’s residents will have to wait to see whether Costco’s presence remains limited to backend operations or expands into retail in the future.
