M Phil Degree is Not a Recognised Degree Anymore: UGC

 - Sakshi Post

New Delhi: If you’re planning to take admission into the M. Phil degree course, drop the idea as the University Grants Commission (UGC) has discontinued the degree. The UGC has issued a statement to publicly announce its decision and has asked the students to not seek admission in M. Phil degree course as it’s stopped recognising the degree.

The Commission has shared the official notice on its official X (formerly Twitter) account which advises the students to not take admissions into M. Phil programmes for the 2023-24 academic year. The university has also asked the authorities to ensure that no fresh admissions are given as M.Phil degree is not recognised by the UGC as a degree anymore.

“It has come to the notice of the UGC that a few Universities are inviting fresh applications for M.Phil (master of Philosophy) program. In This regard, it is to bring to the notice that the M.Phil degree is not a recognized degree. the Regulation No. 14 of the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of Ph.D degree) Regulations 2022 clearly states that Higher Educational Institutions shall not offer M.Phil program,” reads the UGC statement.

Earlier, the UGC had formed an expert committee to review the existing degree nomenclature and suggest a new nomenclature for awarding degrees. The committee has recommended the discontinuation of ‘M.Phil’ degree from the list of specified degrees. Notably, the Delhi University stopped giving admissions into the M.Phil degree from the 2022-23 academic year.
