409 Farmers’ Suicides In AP: Central Minister

Delhi: Union Minister of State for Panchayati Raj, Agriculture and Farmer Welfare Purushottam Rupala told the Rajya Sabha. That 409 farmers have committed suicide in the state of Andhra Pradesh said, He gave a written reply to the question posed by the YSRCongress party MP Vijayasai Reddy.

Vijayasai Reddy’s question asked whether the Union government received information that two thousand farmers committed suicide in the past four years in AP. Is it true that the government failed to implement farmers’ loan waiver which drove many to suicide?

The Minister gave a written reply mentioning the measures taken by the AP state government. A three-member committee was formed in every district and according to the report, a total of 409 farmers have committed suicide.

The reply read ‘from 2014 to 2018, 409 farmers have committed suicide. Failure of borewells, commercial crop farming with heavy investment, not receiving minimum support price, lack of eligibility to bank loans, agricultural land leasing, taking loans from money lenders at higher rate of interest, lack of rains, incessant rains, natural disasters, spending money on child education, health issues stood as the main reasons for farmer suicides as per the three-member committee. Agriculture is in state list and the primary responsibility of development of the sector is with state governments. The Union government provides budget allocations, policy changes complementing the state policies, added the minister.
