Vijayawada: YSR Congress Party on Sunday staged a dharna in protest against the removal of the late Dr. YS Rajasekhar Reddy’s statue from the heart of Vijayawada city.

The city administration on Friday removed the statue of the late leader which had been installed opposite the police control room near Pandit Nehru Bus Stand. The police arrested people who resisted the removal.

The 12-foot bronze statue was installed on a replica of Polavaram project to which the late visionary leader was the chief architect. The location was carefully selected so that it never causes any disruption to traffic movement near the flyover leading Kanakadurga temple. The statue was installed with all permissions and the location was named after the late leader as YSR Chowk.

The statue being removed at midnight.

However, the TDP government, in its vindictive operations against the Opposition YSRCP, stealthily removed the statue at midnight without any notice.

Terming the act as vindictive, YSRCP MLA Roja demanded the reinstallation of the statue and warned the TDP government that people will revolt against the government if it continues its revengeful acts.

Party leaders Meka Pratap Apparao, Rakshana Nidhi, Uppuleti Kalpana, Parthasaradhi, Vangaveeti Radha, Gautham Reddy, Jogi Ramesh, Nageshwar Rao, Bhava Kumar, Padmavati and others participated in the protest.
