Hyderabad: Despite city witnessing good rainfall, the University of Hyderabad (UoH) is reeling under acute water crisis making nearly 1,500 hostel inmates face its brunt.

Apart from water shortage, students also complained about the administration’s incapacity in maintenance of RO plants installed at hostels

Students’ union President Zuhail KP said, “Water supply from the municipal corporation is irregular and we have brought to the notice of the administration to address the issue.”

Although the administration continues to buy tankers to suffice the needs of students, it continues to face water shortage problem. Apart from water shortage, students also complained about the administration’s incapacity in maintenance of RO plants installed at hostels. We have to depend on tankers because the water board gives more water to domestic users and not to the university. However, we have installed rain harvesting mechanism around bore wells and are hopeful that the water table will rise

“Most of the RO plants installed in the hostels do not have a proper room and shed due to which the water enters the motors and other equipment causing damage to the plant,” reads the representation submitted to the administration on Tuesday.

Asked about how the administration is tackling the issue, an official said that they buy 25 litre water cans and supply 40 cans a day to each hostel.

“We have to depend on tankers because the water board gives more water to domestic users and not to the university. However, we have installed rain harvesting mechanism around bore wells and are hopeful that the water table will rise ,” said AE Narsing, UoH Engineer.
