Karimnagar: A 30-year-old man and his father were today sentenced to eight years rigorous imprisonment in a case of dowry death of the former's wife.

The accused, Nelli Mallesham and his parents Nelli Rayamallu (50) and Devamma (48), of Koratapalli village used to harass Mallesham's wife Nelli Lavanya for dowry, according to assistant sub-inspector, legal cell, M A Rasheed.

Lavanya's parents had given money towards dowry at the time of her marriage in May 2010. However, after six months of the marriage, her husband and in-laws started harassing her physically and mentally for additional dowry.

According to police, stressed with the constant harassment, Lavanya allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself at her in-law's house on March 21, 2011.

Later, Lavanya's father filed a complaint of dowry death against her husband and in-laws. The Peddapalli police investigated the case and during trial, Devamma died.

Karimnagar Fifth Additional Sessions Judge D Vasudeva Rao, after examining 19 witnesses, sentenced Mallesham and Rayamallu to eight-year rigorous imprisonment (RI) under section 304(B) of Indian Penal Code. The judge also convicted them to undergo two years RI for dowry harassment under section 498(A) of IPC, another two-year RI for demanding an additional dowry and one year imprisonment after holding them guilty under section 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act. He also imposed a fine of Rs 17,000 on each of them. All the sentences shall run concurrently, the judge ordered.
