This Chhattisgarh Cop Snatches Gun From Naxals, Fires At Them

Attacked by Naxalites, constable snatches pistol from them

This policeman in the Naxal-infested Chhattisgarh is made of a different stuff. When Naxals attacked him, instead of taking to heels in panic and fear, he fought them, snatched the gun from them and fired at them. Needless to say, the hunters became the hunted and ran for their lives.

Constable Bhimaram Kunjam of troubled Dantewada district went to Hitwar village in Kuakonda area on Friday to collect some information. But, five Naxals, who in the guise of villagers, attacked him. Though shocked initially, Kunjam gathered his wits and fought back. The Naxals brandished a gun. Undaunted, Kunjam snatched the pistol and fired at them, forcing them to beat a hasty retreat.

Interestingly, the pistol belonged to a sub-inspector who was killed in a Naxal attack in Kuakonda on February 28, 2014.

Recognising Kunjam's bravery, Superintendent of Police Kamallochan Kashyap has announced a cash award of Rs 10,000. The incident comes close on the heels of another act of bravery, in neighbouring Madhya Pradesh, where a constable ran for a long distance to dispose of an IED that Naxals had planted in a school in tribal dominated area.

Chhattisgarh is among the most Naxal affected states in the country and has reported 3257 Naxal related incidents from 2010 till September 15 this year. The state has also accounted for 1192 deaths due to Naxal violence.
