Narayanapet: The spate of suicides by Intermediate students in Telangana continues unabated. A 17-year old Intermediate first year girl from Danwada mandal in Narayanapet district ended her life on Saturday after she plunged into depression as she was declared failed in Zoology.

According to the police, the deceased Sireesha immolated herself after dousing herself in kerosene. When her elder sister heard shrieks from the top floor she ran upstairs only to see her sister in flames. As her sister ran towards Sireesha, the latter jumped from the top floor. She died instantly as she fell on the ground with a thud.

The deceased parents were away working in the fields when the incident happened. Sireesha was studying at a private junior college in Narayanapet and never expected that she would do poorly in the exam. Guilt engulfed her and she resorted to the extreme step. The Narayanapet police have filed a case and the investigation is on.

Ever since Intermediate results were declared on April 19, nearly 20 Intermediate students in Telangana committed suicide following alleged irregularities in results that has declared many students as ‘failed.’ It is unfortunate that the lackadaisical approach of the Board officials in following a foolproof mechanism in evaluating answer scripts and the subsequent technical snags in declaring results are costing students’ lives.
