Maharashtra Police Conduct Raids On Varavara Rao, Associates’ Houses

Varavara Rao - Sakshi Post

Hyderabad: Maharashtra police conducted raids on the house of revolutionary writer and communist leader, Varavara Rao. A founder-member of Virasam, a group of left-leaning writers and poets, Varavara Rao, is reported to have been questioned by the police.

He is also suspected of having been involved in mobilising funds for the plot to assassinate Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a charge dismissed by the poet and activist as baseless. Other Virasam writers and activists also accused the Central government of stifling the voice of Varavara Rao and others who have been standing up for the rights of poor tribals.

Speaking to Sakshi TV, a close relative of his, claimed that Rao was targeted because he opposed the harassment and killing of innocent tribals. He criticised the Telangana government for lending active cooperation to the Maharashtra police. Varavara Rao had been arrested on previous occasions, but proof had not been produced, he said.

Police parties are also said to have conducted raids on the houses Rao's daughter, EFLU professor, Satyanarayana, Kurmanath, a journalist and others. A group of revolutionary writers had reportedly gone to meet the Telangana DGP and Home minister protesting against the raids.

Speaking to Sakshi TV in June, Varavara Rao claimed that the Modi government tried to choke the voice of those who stood by Dalits and tribals. He dismissed the charge that he was in any way involved in the plot to assassinate PM Modi.
