Student Goes Missing: JNU Protest Ends, VC Released

JNU Vice Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar - Sakshi Post

Agitating students on Thursday let JNU Vice Chancellor (VC) M Jagadesh Kumar leave his office, after keeping him confined there for almost 20 hours over a missing student.

The students on Wednesday held a protest outside the administrative block over the disappearance of Najeeb Ahmed, who has been missing for the past six days. The Jawaharlal Nehru University students forced top officials, including the VC, to stay confined in their offices on Wednesday.

The protesting students, including student wings of Left party and the Congress, claimed inaction of the varsity administration in tracing Ahmed.

The Left student wing has been accusing the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) for its involvement in the alleged abduction of the undergraduate student following a brawl.

"What is the responsibility of a VC, an FIR was also filed by Najeeb Ahmed's mother. Only one person has been found guilty in the Proctorial inquiry; what about the others," Sunny Dhiman, National Students Union of India (NSUI), member said.

Dhiman also said that a student from the School of Russian Studies was also involved in the brawl and had tried to pick a fight with Ahmed on Wednesday.

Apart from the ABVP, all student political bodies took part in the protest and vented their anger against the university officials. Carrying photos of Ahmed, JNU students went about in the neighbourhood inquiring about him.

The Delhi Police on Wednesday announced a reward of Rs 50,000 for information about Ahmed.
