Rains Ravage City Roads; Traffic Comes To A Halt On Highway Near Kukatpally 

Hyderabad: With incessant rains lashing Hyderabad for 12 hours, from 5pm on Tuesday to 5am on Wednesday, most of city’s low lying Bastis are inundated and roads at several areas waterlogged. Traffic came to a standstill in the morning at Moosapet as Moosapet-Kukatpally road was completely inundated in the water that overflowed from nearby nalas.

People living in Bastis around the nalas especially on the suburbs spent sleepless night as the rain waters entered the houses.

Office goes and school buses were stranded in traffic jams at several places as roads were damaged.

“It is a shame on the governments that don’t know there exists a technology for road construction which can withstand any amount of heavy rains,” rues Madhav, a software engineer who got stuck in a mile-long Moosapet traffic jam. With the Hyderabad-Mumbai main road cut off on Sanathnagar-Kukatpally side, traffic is being diverted on the one side of the road.

Surprisingly, neither any traffic police nor GHMC officials were present at the disturbed areas. Huge traffic jams were also reported at Malakpet, Dilsukhnagar, Secunderabad, Miyapur and Lakdi-ka-pool areas and a colony was completely inundated at Nizampet in Kukatpally.

Hussainsagar is full to its capacity and if rains continue for the day and beyond, the situation is going to be dangerous.

The IT hubs of Madhapur and Gachibowli were also hit.

Employees of the IT companies were caught in traffic jams on Raidurgam-Gachibowli, Miyapur-Kondapur and other roads leading towards Hitec City and IT corridor in Gachibowli.

Officials said Qutubullapur area received 16.4 cm rainfall while some other areas recorded 6 to 12 cm rainfall.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Ranganath advised people not to come out of their houses unless necessary. With huge inflows, the water level in Hussain Sagar lake in the heart of the city almost reached the full level. The level stood at 513.4 feet on Wednesday against the full tank level of 513.7 feet.

Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) commissioner Janardhan Reddy said Hussain Sagar was receiving 5,000 cusecs feet of water.

Meanwhile, the Met on Wednesday released fresh alerts on heavy rains for the day as the depression in Bay of Bengal is further strengthening.

Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao reviewed the flood situation from Delhi where he is attending a meeting of Apex Council on water resources for Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
