PM Modi's Shocking Announcement Disappoints Bhakts, Memes Flood Twitter
In a shocking announcement and the most unexpected turn of events, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday announced that he was pulling out the three controversial farm laws which had sparked widespread protests from farmers.
Modi's announcement comes just months ahead of the elections in Punjab and Uttar Pradesh. Modi stated that the process of repealing the contentious farm laws will be done in the parliament session by the end of November.
While apologising to the nation, I want to say with a sincere and pure heart that maybe something was lacking in our tapasya (dedication) that we could not explain the truth, as clear as the light of the diya, to some of our farmer brothers. But today is Prakash Parv, not the time to blame anyone. Today, I want to tell the country that we have decided to repeal the three farm laws
Narendra Modi, PM
PM Modi also urged farmers to end their protests and return to their lands on the auspicious occasion of Guru Purab.
In a U-turn, PM Modi justified his statement saying, what he did earlier was for the good for farmers while what he is doing now is for the sake of nation.
It is worth mentioning here that farmers in thousands from across Punjab, Rajasthan, UP and Haryana had been staging a sit-in on the outskirts of Delhi since November last year to express their displeasure over the laws while demanding that the Centre repeal them. They even branded the farm laws as 'black laws.'
The BJP leadership has come in for severe criticism over the controversial farm laws. Farmers' leader Rakesh Tikait, who had been leading the protests refused to budge, saying he would wait till the farm laws are repealed on November 29.
It is known that there had been several rounds of talks between the farmers and the government over the farm laws. However, all the talks failed. It now appears that PM Modi has had to repeal the laws as he cannot afford to lose votes for his party in the upcoming elections.
Meanwhile, Modi supporters are unhappy over the PM's sudden U-turn. They are trending the hashtag Disappointed
