J&K Govt Declares November 11 as Paid Holiday for Bye-Elections

The Jammu and Kashmir government has declared November 11, 2025, a paid holiday in connection with the bye-elections to Assembly Constituencies 27-Budgam and 77-Nagrota. This decision, made under Section 135B of the Representation of the People’s Act, 1951, aims to facilitate voters in exercising their franchise without any hindrance.

As per Government Order No. 1355-JK(GAD) of 2025, issued by the General Administration Department on October 16, 2025, the poll day will be treated as a paid holiday for employees in businesses, trades, industrial undertakings, and other establishments within the notified constituencies. Employers are prohibited from deducting wages for the holiday, and any contravention may result in a fine of up to five hundred rupees.

The holiday applies to voters in the specified constituencies, except those whose absence may cause danger or substantial loss to their employment. The government has also recognized this paid holiday under Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881, ensuring closure of government and private offices in the affected areas.

This move is expected to enable citizens to participate in the democratic process without worrying about losing wages or facing employer objections. The bye-elections to Assembly Constituencies 27-Budgam and 77-Nagrota are likely to draw significant attention, and the government's decision is seen as a step towards ensuring a smooth and peaceful voting process.
