Chhattisgarh First CM Ajit Jogi Passes Away

RAIPUR: Senior Congress leader and first chief minister of Chhattisgarh Ajit Jogi passed away here on Friday after prolonged battle with ill-health. He was 74. The news of the veteran politician’s death was announced by his son Amit Jogi on Twitter.

The senior Congress leader earlier in the day suffered two massive cardiac arrests prompting the doctors treating him to describe his condition as “extremely critical.” On May 9th, the senior Jogi was admitted to a private hospital in Raipur after he suffered a cardiac arrest at his residence. Since then, he was being treated at the hospital but his condition did not show any signs of improvement.

A former civil servant, Ajit Jogi had served Chhattisgarh as its first chief minister after it was carved out of Madhya Pradesh and formed as a separate state many years ago. His tenure as the CM lasted from November 2000 till November 2003.

A few years after relinquishing the chief-ministership, Ajit Jogi was crippled and confined to a wheel-chair following a ghastly road crash. Later, he severed his ties with Congress, the party that he served for a long time, and floated his own political outfit Janata Congress Chhattisgarh. His attempts at projecting his party as a viable political alternative in the state did not succeed and frequent bouts of ill-health later on pushed him into a state of political oblivion.

Condolences have been pouring in from across the spectrum of politicians in the country.
