University of Hyderabad Laptop Theft: Three Arrested, 60 Laptops Recovered

Cyberabad police have arrested three individuals, including two engineering students from the University of Hyderabad, in connection with the theft of 60 laptops from the university campus. Officials confirmed that the entire stolen property has been recovered.

The theft came to light after laptops were reported missing from the CR Rao Advanced Institute of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science (AIMSCS) located on the university premises in Gachibowli. The incident occurred on the night of February 9.

According to K. Balaraju, Inspector of Police at Gachibowli Police Station, the accused allegedly entered the computer laboratory by breaking open a window. Before gaining access, they reportedly severed the CCTV cables to avoid being recorded. After entering the lab, they made away with all 60 laptops.

Following the complaint, police launched a detailed investigation. Special teams were formed to analyse surveillance footage and collect technical evidence. Based on the findings, officers were able to quickly identify and trace the suspects.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Regula Chandra Shekar, 30, a resident of Prakasam district in Andhra Pradesh, along with Cherukuri Sai Charan and Uduthalapelly Ashwin Rao, both second-year B.Tech Computer Science students at the University of Hyderabad.

Police stated that the accused were familiar with the campus layout and security system, which helped them plan and execute the theft during late-night hours. The stolen laptops were allegedly meant to be sold for financial gain.

During the operation, officers recovered all 60 laptops, along with three mobile phones and two cars that were reportedly used in carrying out the crime. The accused were produced before a court and have been remanded to judicial custody.

Authorities said the swift recovery of the stolen property highlights the coordinated efforts of the investigation teams. Further inquiries are ongoing.
