KCR to Hold Telangana Cabinet Meet on Paddy Procurement Crisis

KCR to Hold Telangana Cabinet Meet on Paddy Procurement Crisis - Sakshi Post

On Monday, the Telangana Cabinet will meet to discuss paddy procurement.

Farmers have also staged protests in a few locations around the state as a result of the situation.

Hyderabad: After the Centre rejected Telangana's request for paddy procurement, Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao convened a meeting of the state Cabinet on Monday to discuss the next steps.

The meeting, which starts at 2 p.m. at Pragati Bhavan, the Chief Minister's official house, will examine the paddy procurement issue and decide on the crops for the upcoming Rabi season.

The discussion is significant in light of the Centre's refusal to reveal the state's paddy procurement objective for the full term and to increase procurement during the current Kharif season.

The Cabinet will debate the plan to convince farmers to produce substitute crops after the Centre banned parboiled rice purchases during the Rabi season.

State Irrigation Minister S. Niranjan Reddy said after a meeting with Union Food and Public Distribution Minister Piyush Goyal on Friday night in Delhi that the Centre has given no clarification on the quantity of paddy to be procured during Kharif.

He claimed the Centre was now avoiding the problem, despite the fact that the Food Corporation of India (FCI) had told the state that 45 lakh tonnes of paddy would be procured.

The state has been pressuring the national government to improve procurement. The state administration is already under criticism from the opposition for its slow paddy procurement from farmers.

Farmers have also staged protests in a few locations around the state as a result of the situation.

Goyal also made it clear during his meeting with a group of state ministers led by Niranjan Reddy that the Centre would not purchase parboiled rice from the state during Rabi.

The Centre's stance, according to Niranjan Reddy, is unfortunate. He stated that they had returned from the national capital disheartened.

The state administration had also requested that the central minister set purchase objectives for the two crops for the full year, but the central minister said that this was not possible.

Last week, the Chief Minister held a dharna in Hyderabad to demand that the Centre lift all paddy produced in the state. He also wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah about the matter.

In light of the Centre's decision not to buy parboiled rice from the state, the Cabinet meeting is likely to focus on the crops to be grown during Rabi. Farmers will be advised to switch to alternative crops by the government.

Farmers had reacted angrily to the government's prior attempts to convince them to plant substitute crops, with state BJP president Bandi Sanjay pushing them to continue with paddy farming and promising that he would pressurise the government to acquire it.

The ruling TRS has taken serious issues with the BJP leader's position and informed Goyal about it.
