Hyderabad city has got the coveted ' Water Plus' status. It is the first city in Telangana to receive the Water Plus certificate. Hyderabad is the first city in the state to get Water Plus certificate after receiving the open defecation free (ODF++) label. This signifies that the city is properly treating its waste water before releasing it into the environment.

Hyderabad has been awarded the ‘Water Plus' designation by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) as part of the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) - Urban.

Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister KT Rama Rao congratulated the people of Hyderabad and said that the government will continue its efforts. "Congratulations to the citizens of #Hyderabad on our city getting the coveted "Water plus" status of the Swachh Bharat Mission from the Govt of India. Hyderabad is already recognised as ODF++ city. We will continue to endeavour to make it cleaner & greener," he tweeted.

Till date, 772 MLD of waste water is processed every day by 25 sewage treatment facilities (STPs) under the authority of the HMWSSB and three STPs operated by the HMDA. The purified water is utilised to produce avenue trees, create greenery in parks, and build flyovers and pathways. The water is also used in public restrooms and to support the agricultural needs of downstream communities.

According to the third-party inspection report, GHMC fared well in all nine of the nine categories in which the country's urban local governments were evaluated. The top parameters in which the GHMC did well were safe discharge of sewage or septage (faecal sludge) and sufficient capacity of desludging trucks and jetting equipment.
