CoWin Website Hackers Threaten to Sell User Data, Govt Dubs it Fake News

 - Sakshi Post

It is known that the Indian government has made it mandatory for citizens to register themselves on the vaccine-registration portal CoWin to get the Covid-19 vaccine. The Co-Win website seeks information of individuals including a person’s name, mobile number, Aadhaar ID and GPS for registration.

After the Covid pandemic started, many individuals have started using the application with which the website has already acquired a database of millions of users through the process.

But, in a worrisome post, a hackers group 'Dark Leak Market' stated that it has the database of all those who have registered themselves on the CoWin portal.

The criminal intelligence profiling platform shared a screenshot in which it is offering to sell the database it has acquired from undisclosed sources.

It claimed to resell the database for $800, stating that they are not the original leakers of the data. DarkTracer, in their tweet, mentioned that information of about 150 million vaccinated people in India is at stake. If the claims are to be believed, all our data is already out in the market prices at $800.

However, the Union Health Ministry stated that all the vaccination data in a safe and secure digital environment. The Centre refuted all such reports and said the news on social media prima facie appears to be fake.
