22nd Rank Reality vs 1st Rank Claims’: YS Jagan’s Scathing Attack on Naidu Govt
Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and YSR Congress Party president YS Jagan Mohan Reddy on Monday launched a sharp attack on Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, accusing the TDP-led government of misleading the public with “cooked up” economic figures while the State slips into a slowdown.
In a strongly worded post on X, YS Jagan said the much-publicised economic vision of the Chandrababu Naidu government was “high on hype and low on performance”, alleging that lies and deceit had become routine under the present administration.
YS Jagan pointed out that the State was facing a clear economic slowdown, which, he said, was evident from weak government revenues. However, he alleged that the government was projecting inflated Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) figures to create a false impression of rapid growth.
According to figures released by the State government, Andhra Pradesh’s economy reportedly grew at 11.75 per cent (nominal GSDP) in 2024–25, compared to the national growth rate of 9.8 per cent. For 2025–26, the State’s economy is projected to grow at 10.75 per cent against a national rate of 8 per cent, translating to a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.09 per cent over two years. The government has also claimed that Andhra Pradesh ranks third in the country in terms of real GSDP growth.
YS Jagan questioned the credibility of these claims, stating that the figures were not released by any independent agency but were prepared by Chandrababu Naidu’s own office. He argued that if such high growth were real, it should have been reflected in government revenues as well.
Citing figures released by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) for the first nine months of the current financial year, YS Jagan said State tax revenues had grown at a CAGR of only 1.97 per cent over the same two-year period. He said it defied economic logic that a State claiming over 11 per cent GSDP growth could record such poor tax revenue growth.
“This would puzzle economists across the world,” he remarked, alleging that such a mismatch was possible only due to manipulated statistics under what he described as so-called “visionary” leadership.
YS Jagan further noted that the CAG had uploaded revenue data for 23 States and that Andhra Pradesh ranked 22nd in tax revenue growth — second from the bottom. While Central government gross tax revenues grew by 9.64 per cent during the period, Andhra Pradesh’s tax revenues increased by just 1.97 per cent, he pointed out. Yet, he said, the State government was claiming economic performance superior to that of the Centre.
The former Chief Minister alleged that if Andhra Pradesh were to rank first in any category under Chandrababu Naidu’s leadership, it would be in government debt, corruption, political vendetta and false propaganda, not economic performance.
