ICMR Permits SVIMS To Conduct Plasma Therapy

CHITTOOR: The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR)  has granted permission to Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) at Chittoor for conducting plasma therapy for testing COVID-19 patients, said Andhra Pradesh special Chief Secretary (Health) KS Jawahar Reddy on Tuesday.

Under the therapy, plasma is extracted from the blood of a recovered COVID-19 patient and injected in critically-ill patient.

Three weeks ago, the state health department permitted SVIMS and Kurnool CGH to collect and store plasma from the recovered patients as short clinical trials in some countries showed that plasma therapy is effective in treating moderate to severely ill coronavirus patients.  

Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh reported 48 new cases taking the state's tally to 2,719 and the active cases in the state stand at 759 on Tuesday. A total of 1,903 people have been recovered and discharged from COVID-19 designated hospitals. 
The death toll in the state stands at 57, according to the state health ministry update at 10 am.A total of 8,148 samples have been tested in the last 24 hours (9 am -9 am Tuesday).
