Nehru Zoo Remains Open, Safari Closed Temporarily For Maintenance

Nehru Zoological Park - Sakshi Post

Hyderabad: The safari in Nehru Zoological Park has been shut down temporarily due to the ensuing maintenance work in order to prevent inflow of water during rainy season. The Zoo officials said safari would restart in two or three days after the completion of work.

It may be recalled that last year the rains caused Mir Alam tank water to gush into animal enclosures due to which the visitors had to cut short their tour as authorities closed the Zoo Park.

“Last year, we faced a difficult situation due to heavy rainfall as a lot of water came into the zoo from Mir Alam Tank," said Shivani Dogra, Nehru Zoological Park curator.

The officials are working on cleaning the channels and constructing of a bigger culvert for the movement of water during monsoons. Similarly, they are taking precautions for protecting the animals from the heat. To keep the animals hydrated, a special diet has been planned like providing fruits etc.

Wallowing points, water and mud points have been set up for the animals to cover their bodies with mud in order to lessen the effects of the heat.
