IIT-Madras Scholar Thrashed Over ‘Beef Fest’; 9 Booked

Chennai: An IIT-Madras PhD scholar was beaten up by some students protesting against the "beef fest" held in the campus on Sunday. In this regard the police have booked nine students on Tuesday.

The victim, R. Sooraj, who is associated with the Ambedkar Periyar Study Circle, said that students who claimed to be Sangh Parivar supporters assaulted him when he was having lunch in the mess and beat him. A picture of Sooraj being wheeled into a hospital with a visible injury on his right eye is doing the rounds in the social media.

A case has been booked against the accused under IPC 147, 341, 323 and 506. Incidentally, Sooraj has also been booked under IPC 324 - Voluntarily causing hurt, 341-wrongful restraints, according to accused Manish Kumar's complaint.

Notably, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan condemned the attack and asked Tamil Nadu chief minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami to take required action.

Nearly 70 to 80 students held a "beef fest" in the campus to protest the Centre's ban on the sale of cattle for slaughter at animal markets.
