Girls’ School Uniform Termed ‘Vulgar’, Changed After Social Media Storm

Thiruvananthapuram: A school in Kerala has run into controversy for the uniform of girl students which created heated discussions on the social media.

The debate began after photographer Zachariah Ponkunnam posted pictures of three girls in the uniform of St Alphonsa Public School in Aruvithura on Facebook terming it ‘vulgar’. The post went viral on most social media networks following which the school received number complaints online. The post received different kinds of reactions from people on the internet and over five thousand people shared the post in one day terming it as 'vulgarity'.

A person Noushad Thekkayil from Kozhikode filed a complaint with the State Child Rights Commission against the school authorities over the uniform.

"We did nothing wrong. The design was selected by Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) and got it stitched three months ago. We have not received any complaints from the parents regarding the uniform till now. However, we are all worried about the controversy and the children are upset. So we have decided to make a change to the uniform,” said PTA president Sabu Cyriac.

However, the school principal Sr Rosily claimed that the photograph which was being circulated on social media was photoshopped and looks nothing like the real uniform. She also posted the photograph of the actual uniform on the social media.

After rising many debates regarding the school uniform, the school authorities have decided to change the uniform.
